Ice nine is a fictional substance created by author Kurt Vonnegut in his novel "Cat's Cradle". The substance is described as a form of water that has a melting point of 114.4 degrees Fahrenheit (45.8 degrees Celsius), instead of the usual 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius). It is capable of turning any water it comes into contact with into ice nine, causing a chain reaction that eventually freezes all water on Earth. The substance was created by a fictional scientist named Felix Hoenikker as a military weapon, but was never intended for use due to its catastrophic potential.
